Kenya

Kenya was popularized by early explorers who made Nairobi a famous safari base that came to serve royals and dignitaries in the early 1900s. Kenya is steeped in nostalgia and the romance of early explorers like Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt, who journeyed through Kenya on safari in the early 1900s. Today, Kenya remains among the top safari destinations.

Kenya lies across the equator with vast savannah grasslands, which are home to big game. Kenya also boasts snow-capped mountains and pristine beaches along the Indian Ocean. A definitive feature is the Great Rift Valley, which cuts across the country.

Kenya is dotted with conservation areas, including Amboseli, Nakuru, Tsavo and the Masai Mara, which plays host to the phenomenal spectacle of the great migration and remains the top attraction. The great migration sees over 1.5 million wildebeest and thousands of zebra and gazelles traverse a continuous circular 500-mile route from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti as the great herd follows the rains.

November to February is the calving season, so the plains are littered with newborn calves, making it a feasting season for the big cats.
July to September remains the best time to see the herd moving in the Mara. The herds leave the plains of the Serengeti and cross into the Masai Mara in vast numbers. This is the time for river crossings, where the drama of the big crocodiles eating to their brim as they take full advantage of the plentiful herds crossing their river territory.

The diversity of the people of Kenya makes Kenya a melting pot of African cultures. The Arab influenced Swahili culture of the Indian Ocean coast meets Bantu and Nilotic cultures, creating unique infusions and foods.

Buutu Safaris has excelled at Kenya safaris over the past decade. Whether it’s the Great Migration safari or a Kenya classic safari, Buutu Safaris will ensure you experience the best Kenya has to offer. Go for the thrill in the Masai Mara before going for your ultimate gorilla trekking encounter in Uganda.

Rwanda

Rwanda – the land of a thousand hills cascading with infinite grace. Rwanda is indeed blessed with unique landscapes and extraordinary biodiversity, with incredible wildlife living throughout its volcanoes, montane rainforest, and sweeping plains.

The top attractions are the mountain gorillas in the blanketed mountain ranges of Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda hosts a quarter of the mountain gorilla population along with Uganda (half) and DR Congo (a quarter). Rwanda and Uganda have created a unique safari experience where conservation-based tourism of gorilla trekking has proved crucial in saving the endangered mountain gorillas. Travellers get to experience the once in a life time thrill of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural tropical rainforest habitat.

And yet with its inspirational story of transformation, Rwanda has diligently worked to move on from the grim episode of genocide to become one of Africa’s remarkable transformational stories.

Rwanda offers a lot more than gorilla trekking. From Kigali, arguably Africa’s most vibrant city, to the great rift valley/Albertine rift valley, which is home to many endemic species, Rwanda awes every visitor. Rwanda has big game including lions, rhinos, giraffes and other mammals that dwell in Akagera, Nyungwe Forest and other national parks. Rwanda also has remarkable creativity that spans time from ancient kingdoms and is uniquely celebrated in rich traditional dance and architecture. Visitors to Rwanda can enjoy all this happily in the knowledge that Rwanda leads with a green mindset; having banned plastic bags in 2008 remains one of the countries innovatively leading in the transition to greener living. Above all, Rwanda was voted as the 9th safest country in the world by the World Economic Forum. Rwanda is now an upscale, low-impact destination with some of the best lodges in the world ( https://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/africa-top-resorts )

Uganda

“But the Kingdom of Uganda is a fairy tale. You climb up a railway instead of a beanstalk, and at the end there is a wonderful new world. The scenery is different, the vegetation is different, the climate is different, and, most of all, the people are different from anything else to be seen in the whole range of Africa. Instead of the breezy uplands we enter a tropical garden.”

“I had travelled through tropical forests in Cuba and India, and had often before admired their enchanting, yet sinister, luxuriance. But the forests of Uganda, for magnificence, for variety of form and colour, for profusion of brilliant life—plant, bird, insect, reptile, beast—for the vast scale and awful fecundity of the natural processes that are beheld at work, eclipsed, and indeed effaced, all previous impressions.

…..Birds are as bright as butterflies; butterflies are as big as birds. The air hums with flying creatures; the earth crawls beneath your foot. The telegraph-wire runs northward to Gondokoro through this vegetable labyrinth. Even its poles had broken into buds!” The camera cannot do justice to such a panorama. In photographs these vast expanses look like mere scrubby commons, inhospitable and monotonous to the eye, melancholy to the soul. One has to remember that here are Kew Gardens and the Zoo combined on an unlimited scale; that Nature’s central productive laboratory is here working night and day at full blast; and that the scrubby common of the picture is really a fairyland of glades and vistas.” ….Winston Churchill

In 1907, Churchill waxed eloquent about Uganda on his safari. A century later, The Lonely Planet (https://www.lonelyplanet.com/uganda )voted Uganda the number 1 destination. CNN Travel (https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/where-to-travel-best-destinations-2023/index.html ) also ranked Uganda as a top travel destination in 2023. Conde Naste Traveller Magazine (https://www.cntraveller.com/article/uganda-africa-giles-foden ) not to be left out also highly recommended Uganda as a top destination in 2023.

But what is it about Uganda? 300 million years ago when the pangea split into continents, the richest biodiversity on earth remained in a part of Africa that straddles Uganda and Congo. Here, in unique climatic conditions, biodiversity evolved into lavish richness unlike elsewhere in the world.

Ecologically Uganda is where the east African savannah grasslands meet the tropical rainforests from West Africa. As such one can track lions in the morning, trek chimpanzees through the rainforest the next day, navigate the Nile teeming with hippopotami and crocodile and then trek deep into Bwindi to stare into the pensive eyes of mountain gorillas. Uganda’s verdant biodiversity is attested to by Uganda’s status as the smallest of 4 African countries whose bird list tops the 1000 mark with a bird list of 1,066 species.

Gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking safaris are the most popular tours but that’s not to take away from big game encounters and unique cultural experiences.
